Prayer Aligns Our Hearts With God

Scripture: Matthew 6:5-14

Prayer Is More Than Asking for Help

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we connect with God’s heart. Many people think of prayer as simply asking God for help, but true prayer is much deeper.

Prayer is a conversation with our Heavenly Father. It is a sacred space where we slow down, become still, and open our hearts before God. In prayer, we are not just speaking to God—we are also learning to listen. As we quiet our minds and focus on Him, we begin to sense His presence, comfort, and guidance in our lives.

Yeshua gave us an example of how we should pray in Matthew 6:5-14. This covers everything from how we approach our Heavenly Father to how we end our prayers in faith knowing He rules and reigns over all. The focus is on God and His greatness. Prayer lifts us out of our earthly realm into the heavenly realm where all things are possible with God.

What Happens When We Pray Regularly

As we spend time with God in prayer, our hearts begin to align with His. Over time, prayer shapes the way we think, respond, and live. Our perspective begins to shift as we grow closer to Him.

When we truly seek God, we discover that He is compassionate, faithful, and deeply invested in our lives. His desire has always been connection, restoration, and relationship with those He created.

A Change in Our Daily Living

Prayer changes us. Instead of being driven by fear, stress, or control, we begin to experience God’s peace. We start to trust that He is working in our lives even when we cannot see the full picture.

Our values shift toward what matters to Him—His Kingdom, our relationship with Him, love, holiness, humility, forgiveness, and compassion for others.

Surrender Happens in Prayer

Prayer becomes the place where we release our burdens and trust God with what we cannot control. It reminds us that we are not meant to carry every weight alone. When we place our worries in His hands, we discover a deeper sense of peace and confidence in His care.

Scripture: John 14:6 (NIV): “Yeshua (Jesus) answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”

As we understand God’s heart more, our lives begin to transform in profound ways. Understanding Him isn’t merely an intellectual pursuit; it truly leads to a deep, inner change. The closer we draw to God, the more His character influences our thoughts, actions, and relationships with those around us.

Yeshua Is the Only Way to the Father

Yeshua (Jesus) exemplifies the heart of God like no one else. His life was a testament to divine love in motion. He reached out to the outcasts, mended the brokenhearted, extended forgiveness, and offered wisdom wrapped in grace. Through Yeshua, we witness the heart of Father God that bursts with mercy while simultaneously inviting us to a renewed and transformative life.

As we deepen our understanding of God’s heart, our priorities start to shift. Our self-serving desires fade, replaced by a wish to serve God and offer love to others. We find ourselves becoming more patient, compassionate, and forgiving, as His Spirit gently molds our hearts. This journey of seeking a deeper connection with God unfolds gradually, one day at a time, through surrender, obedience, and trust.

Knowing God’s Heart Is a Journey

Pursuing God to know Him as Father God is a lifelong, wonderful, personal experience. Often, it is amidst trials that we gain our clearest insights of Him. When we face hardships and lean into His strength rather than relying on our own, we uncover His faithfulness in ways we might not have seen before. Ultimately, knowing God’s heart invites us to move past mere religion into a deep relationship with Him. It transforms how we perceive ourselves, how we engage with others, and how we interpret the world. The beautiful reality is this: the more passionately we pursue God, the more He unveils His heart to us, guiding us on a transformative journey of healing, restoration, and wholeness.

Scripture: Jeremiah 29:13  “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”

For many believers, God is a presence they acknowledge, but fewer truly experience the depths of His heart. Scripture reveals that God longs for a relationship with us that goes far beyond religious routines. To know God’s heart is to understand His character, His desires, and the incredible love He has for humanity.

God Desires Relationship

Throughout the Bible, we see that God is not distant or indifferent. Instead, He continually invites us into a personal relationship. Jeremiah 29:13 reminds us of this promise: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” This truth shows that knowing God is not reserved for a select few. Anyone who sincerely seeks Him can discover the richness of His presence.

Know God Through His Word

One of the primary ways we come to understand God’s heart is through His Word. The Bible reveals His compassion, mercy, justice, and faithfulness. Page after page, we see a loving Father pursuing His children, even when they wander far from Him. Stories like the prodigal son illustrate God’s willingness to forgive and restore. Ultimately, the greatest display of God’s heart is seen in Yeshua (Jesus), whose sacrifice on the cross reveals a love that reaches every person.

Know God by Spending Time With Him

God reveals Himself more to us as we spend time with Him in prayer, experience His presence, and worship Him. Time with Him deepens our connection. Our hearts begin to align with His. We gradually adopt the values that matter most to Him. There is a transformation that takes place. Knowing God’s heart is not about learning religious rules—it is about discovering the loving Father who has been reaching out to us all along.

When we seek God sincerely through Scripture and prayer, we begin to glimpse His heart in ways that transform how we see Him and ourselves. Yet discovering His heart is only the beginning of a much deeper journey.

God has a plan for your life and He wants to lead and guide you on your journey. You are not meant to journey independently from God. He is a wonderful Heavenly Father who loves you more than you can comprehend.

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

In the light of Naomi Judd’s recent tragic suicide and struggle with debilitating depression for much of her life, I wanted to take a moment and reflect on this very serious issue.

Many of you have read my book, Rainbow in the Night: A Journey of Redemption. I shared my own struggles with depression for much of my childhood and even episodic depression as an adult.

My father was a psychiatrist and administrator of a very large state mental hospital from 1958-1978. (A picture of the hospital is in this blog post.) I remember when we first arrived, his first administrative decision was to bring dignity to the mentally ill. In those days there was terrible stigma attached to mental illness. He made “Who Was Who in America” for the amazing transformation of this hospital during his tenure.

To his credit, the hospital is one of the few state hospitals still open today. He always used to say, “But for the grace of God, go I.” I learned never to judge people suffering with mental illness and followed in his footsteps by getting my Masters Degree in Social Work in 1993.

I want to encourage anyone who is trying to hide depression to get help, and for the rest of us to keep our eyes and ears open and gently encourage those we know and love who are suffering to get help. There are many wonderful treatments today and much hope for a productive and fulfilling life.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

Grief and Loss

Grief and Loss

There are so many people who have lost a loved one recently. It’s important to remember when going through the grieving process that it is not necessarily linear.

There are five stages according to the Kubler Ross theory:

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance.

It is common to go in and out of the various stages in no special order. It is important to fully embrace whatever stage and feelings you are experiencing. In time, they will lessen.

I like to suggest that you look at the ocean and watch the waves. Each wave of sadness is followed by a wave of healing. In time, the waves lessen, and the intense emotions soften.

It is important to remember the goal of grief and loss is never to forget your loved one but to remember them in a healing way through your memories and special moments you shared together.

This side of Heaven, our grieving will always be incomplete. It is important to keep an eternal perspective.

I leave you with this Scripture: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18 (NIV) Don’t forget to pray!

Here for you,
