May Mental Wellness: The Healing Power of Surrender

May Mental Wellness: The Healing Power of Surrender

May Mental Wellness: The Healing Power of Surrender

by Jane “Goldie” Winn, MSS

Scripture: Isaiah 40:31
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

May is often a month filled with transition—school endings, schedule changes, financial pressures, and emotional fatigue from the year’s buildup. For many people, it quietly becomes one of the most mentally and emotionally overwhelming seasons.

That’s why this May’s mental wellness focus is simple but powerful: surrender.

Not surrender as in defeat—but surrender as in release. A conscious decision to stop carrying what was never meant to be carried alone.

What Surrender Really Means for Mental Wellness

In mental health terms, surrender is closely tied to acceptance, emotional regulation, and cognitive reframing. It is the practice of letting go of the illusion of control over everything around you.

Surrender does not mean you stop caring.
It means you stop trying to control what you cannot change.

For many people struggling with anxiety, burnout, or emotional overload, the mind becomes stuck in a cycle of “what if” and “if only.” Surrender breaks that cycle by grounding you in the present moment.

Why Surrender Is So Hard

Surrender sounds peaceful—but it often feels uncomfortable.

That’s because the brain is wired to seek control as a survival mechanism. When life feels uncertain, we try to manage outcomes, people, timing, and even emotions.

But mental wellness begins to shift when you realize:

  • Control is often an illusion
  • Overthinking does not equal problem-solving
  • Carrying everything mentally leads to burnout
  • Peace requires release, not resistance

Surrender is not weakness. It is emotional honesty.

Signs You May Need to Practice Surrender

You may be holding too tightly if you notice:

  • Constant overthinking or racing thoughts
  • Difficulty sleeping due to worry
  • Emotional exhaustion or irritability
  • Feeling responsible for everything and everyone
  • Trouble letting go of outcomes you cannot control

These are often signals that your mind and body are asking for rest—not more effort.

Practical Ways to Practice Surrender in Daily Life

Surrender is not just a mindset—it is a practice you build daily.

1. Pause and Acknowledge

Instead of pushing through stress, pause and name it:
“I am anxious right now, and I don’t have to fix everything at this moment.”

2. Replace Control with Trust

Shift your internal language from:

  • “I have to figure this out right now”
    to
  • “I will take the next right step”

3. Release Through Prayer or Reflection

For those who are faith-centered, surrender often becomes spiritual:
“God, I release what I cannot control and trust You with what I cannot see.”

4. Limit Mental Overloading

Reduce inputs that increase anxiety—doom scrolling, excessive planning, or constantly revisiting problems without solutions.

5. Practice Rest Without Guilt

Rest is not a reward for finishing everything. It is part of the healing process itself.

The Mental Health Benefits of Surrender

When surrender becomes a habit, several changes often follow:

  • Reduced anxiety and rumination
  • Improved emotional regulation
  • Better sleep and nervous system balance
  • Increased clarity in decision-making
  • Greater resilience during stress

Surrender creates space in the mind where peace can enter.

A Faith-Based Perspective on Surrender

For many, surrender is deeply spiritual. It is the act of placing burdens into God’s hands rather than carrying them alone.

One of the most grounding scriptures for mental wellness is:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”  1 Peter 5:7

This is not just comfort—it is a mental reset. A reminder that you were never meant to carry everything by yourself.

Final Thought

May is not just about awareness—it is about permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to breathe. Permission to let go.

Surrender is not the end of strength.
It is often the beginning of peace.

The Healing Power of Surrender: A 30-Day Devotional Journey from a Painful Past to Peace and Purpose by Jane Goldie Winn
Surrendering Anxiety

Surrendering Anxiety

Surrendering Anxiety

by Jane “Goldie” Winn, MSS

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:7

Anxiety has a way of tightening its grip when we try to control everything around us. The more we strive to fix, predict, and manage every outcome, the more restless our hearts can become. True rest isn’t found in having all the answers—it’s found in surrender.

Surrendering anxiety to God is not about ignoring problems or pretending everything is fine. It’s a conscious decision to release what we cannot control and trust the One who can. It means bringing every worry, fear, and “what if” into His presence and choosing faith over fear, even when circumstances remain unchanged.

There is a quiet strength in surrender. When we lay our burdens before God, we acknowledge that we are not meant to carry them alone. This act shifts our focus from our limitations to His sufficiency. Instead of being consumed by anxious thoughts, we begin to experience a sense of peace that isn’t dependent on outcomes.

Rest comes when we stop striving and start trusting. It grows in moments of prayer, in honest conversations with God, and in the simple practice of letting go—again and again if needed. Surrender is not a one-time event but a daily posture of the heart.

In that surrender, something beautiful happens. Our minds begin to settle, our breathing slows, and our perspective changes. We may not have every answer, but we gain something greater: the assurance that we are held, guided, and cared for.

Finding rest in God doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means we are no longer carrying its weight alone.

If you’ve been struggling with anxiety, there is help available to you. You can experience the rest and peace you long for.

I have written a powerful 30-day devotional ebook to help you walk daily in God’s rest and divine peace.

Leaning on God’s Promises

Leaning on God’s Promises

Leaning on God’s Promises

by Jane “Goldie” Winn, MSS

Scripture: Psalm 119:89 (ESV)
“Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.”

This powerful verse in Psalm 119 emphasizes that God’s Word is unchanging and eternally established—completely stable and trustworthy no matter what shifts around us.

Leaning on God’s promises is a LIFELINE for everyday living. When circumstances feel uncertain, overwhelming, or even painful, His promises anchor us in something unshakable. They remind us that what we see isn’t the full story, and what we feel isn’t the final truth.

Throughout Scripture, God consistently invites us to trust Him—not just in the easy moments, but especially in the hard ones. His promises speak directly to our fears: He promises peace when anxiety rises, strength when we feel weak, provision when we lack, and presence when we feel alone. These aren’t empty words; they are assurances backed by His unchanging character.

Leaning on God’s promises requires intentionality. It means choosing to believe what God says over what our circumstances suggest. It’s waking up and declaring truth even when emotions disagree. It’s returning, again and again, to the quiet confidence that God is faithful to fulfill every word He has spoken.

Sometimes, that leaning looks like surrender—releasing control, letting go of outcomes, and trusting God with the process. It’s in that place of surrender that His promises become more than words; they become lived experiences. Peace replaces striving. Hope rises in the middle of uncertainty. Strength shows up exactly when you need it.

If you’ve been feeling weary, uncertain, or in need of healing, now is the perfect time to draw closer and lean deeper. You don’t have to walk this journey alone.

I have written a powerful ebook to help you discover what happens when you fully trust the promises of God.

Prayer Aligns Our Hearts With God

Prayer Aligns Our Hearts With God

Prayer Aligns Our Hearts With God

by Jane “Goldie” Winn, MSS

Scripture: Matthew 6:5-14

Prayer Is More Than Asking for Help

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we connect with God’s heart. Many people think of prayer as simply asking God for help, but true prayer is much deeper.

Prayer is a conversation with our Heavenly Father. It is a sacred space where we slow down, become still, and open our hearts before God. In prayer, we are not just speaking to God—we are also learning to listen. As we quiet our minds and focus on Him, we begin to sense His presence, comfort, and guidance in our lives.

Yeshua gave us an example of how we should pray in Matthew 6:5-14. This covers everything from how we approach our Heavenly Father to how we end our prayers in faith knowing He rules and reigns over all. The focus is on God and His greatness. Prayer lifts us out of our earthly realm into the heavenly realm where all things are possible with God.

What Happens When We Pray Regularly

As we spend time with God in prayer, our hearts begin to align with His. Over time, prayer shapes the way we think, respond, and live. Our perspective begins to shift as we grow closer to Him.

When we truly seek God, we discover that He is compassionate, faithful, and deeply invested in our lives. His desire has always been connection, restoration, and relationship with those He created.

A Change in Our Daily Living

Prayer changes us. Instead of being driven by fear, stress, or control, we begin to experience God’s peace. We start to trust that He is working in our lives even when we cannot see the full picture.

Our values shift toward what matters to Him—His Kingdom, our relationship with Him, love, holiness, humility, forgiveness, and compassion for others.

Surrender Happens in Prayer

Prayer becomes the place where we release our burdens and trust God with what we cannot control. It reminds us that we are not meant to carry every weight alone. When we place our worries in His hands, we discover a deeper sense of peace and confidence in His care.

Would you like help developing a daily rhythm of prayer and surrender?
