Pain Points: Depression

I wanted to begin talking about pain points that I experienced in my life and wrote about in my autobiography: “Rainbow in the Night: A Journey of Redemption.” When I was a child, I suffered from depression, and my mother always said I would carry around a pocket full of tears wherever I went. In our family of origin, we were not allowed to talk about our feelings, so I buried them down deep into my subconscious mind. Anger turned inward is depression, and because anger was definitely not acceptable, I became depressed. I remember there were times I wanted to die, and at times it felt debilitating. But I was good at masking my depression, and I escaped reading Bobbsey Twin books and pretending I was in a different family. I also slept a lot and wrote in my diary what I was really feeling deep inside.

When I came to know Yeshua (Jesus) as my Messiah in 1974, He immediately gave me the gift of joy. I knew it was a miraculous sign that Yeshua was real as the transformation was unbelievable! The joy of the Lord truly became my strength. However, there were times even in my life as a Believer that I experienced depression during rough patches. I have since learned that even though this Scripture is true, we can get triggered in our present day life and need to protect our vulnerable past hurts: 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.” (NIV)

I liken it to someone who may have diabetes and needs to make sure the disease is managed by taking insulin, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise. Otherwise, the disease can flare up.

So how do we manage our triggers with emotional illness, you might ask?  It’s different for everyone, but for me, I needed to set appropriate boundaries and not allow emotional abuse in my life ever again. I surround myself with positive people, stay grounded in the Word, have accountability partners to come alongside me when necessary, and most importantly, daily prayer. Another very important principle is to stay grounded in the present. Depression likes to take us back into our past so we can obsess with “if onlys”: “if only I had done…, if only I hadn’t done…”

We only have today, and that is where we must stay, in the gift of the present.

“Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34 (NIV)

Take Time to Hear God’s Voice

Take Time to Hear God’s Voice

The Lord says in His word to “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:31 NIV

I used to take quarterly retreats by myself to pray, write, reflect, and rest. I felt it was time to reinstate this tradition. I found a hotel on the beach that had very high cleansing standards for Covid-19. I believe it is important to quiet our minds and hearts so we can hear His still small voice speaking to our hearts.

I have taken this time to pray, reflect, and write about all I learned during the quarantine. There have been amazing life lessons. Perhaps for me the most important realization is to appreciate every day to the fullest and not concern myself about the future.

One of my life scriptures comes from Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Also I have come to appreciate in greater measure the simple things in life. I have allowed the Lord to fill up my gratefulness cup to overflowing so that I can be a blessing to others. I would love to hear from you the greatest lesson you learned during this pandemic. Please feel free to email me at goldalah@icloud.com

I’m here for you and please stay safe.

The Twists and Turns of Life

The Twists and Turns of Life

On one of my recent walks I saw this tree with many twisted branches. In my book “Rainbow in the Night: A Journey of Redemption” I share about many unexpected twists and turns in life that at first seemed very overwhelming. But as I continued trusting the Lord every day for guidance, He revealed His perfect will for my life. Every change was an exciting new adventure! Looking back through the rear view mirror, I am deeply grateful I trusted my unknown future to a known God.

The New Normal

The New Normal

Resiliency and trust are two attributes I talk about in my book “Rainbow in the Night: A Journey of Redemption.” As you can see in the picture of this palm tree, though it fell after a major storm, it continues to grow and flourish despite the circumstances. It used to be straight and tall, palms blowing in the wind, and now it’s flat on the ground. But notice that it is still flourishing, and other plants are growing alongside to support the trunk.

While we are facing all the changes in our world as we know it due to this worldwide pandemic, we need to trust that we will get through it as long as we adjust our attitude and have hope and faith that this too shall pass!

We can help and support each other to find new ways to adapt and cope. We are all in this together! Pray and keep the faith!

For an encouraging read during these trying times you can order my book RAINBOW IN THE NIGHT: A JOURNEY OF REDEMPTION on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Kindle.

Journey to Victory

Journey to Victory

I’ve been asked why it took 20 years to finish writing my book “Rainbow in the Night: A Journey of Redemption.” There was more healing needed in my life before I was ready to complete the book. I wanted to write from a place of victory.

As I walked further down the path of life, I didn’t know what awaited me on the other side. However, I knew that when I finally emerged I would be someplace different then when I began.  When I started writing again, everything fell into place. And I could see my life in perspective—not as a victim but a victor!

Hope you will take the journey with me!
